Greetings! The school year is off to a great start! The students are completing the Iowa Test of Basic Skills this week. This is a norm-referenced test which allows me to see how your child compares to fifth graders across the nation. Thus far, the students have been doing a great job! We started the test Monday by completing the Sources of Information. The week will progress as follows:

Tuesday-Vocabulary and Reading
Wednesday-Language Arts
Thursday-Math
Friday-Science and Social Studies

Please remember to check your child’s agenda on a daily basis. Fifth grade is such a critical year because of the possibility of retention if a student scores a level one in math and reading on the CRCT. Your child and I really need your support!

In the language arts block, we are currently working on narrative elements, main idea, and graphic features. We began the school year by completing the story, “Satchmo’s Blues.” Our next story will be Roberto Clemente. Our language skill is parts of speech and types of sentences.

Hello Students and Parents! We have only two weeks left until the holiday break! During this time, we will continue to administer the Fulton County Checkpoints Science and Social Studies Test. Please make sure that your child gets plenty of rest.

English/Language Arts: We will be working on cause/effect relationships, comparing/contrasting, and verb tenses.

Mathematics: We will focus on fractions, decimals, and percentages conversions.

Science: We will focus on inherited traits.

Writing: Persuasive Writing

Reading/ELA

We will continue to work on character traits, parts of speech, and figurative language. Students should be reading nightly. While they are reading please make sure that you and the student are filling out their reading log information nightly. Students are expected to read 25 books by the end of the school year. Please make sure that you are asking them questions while they are reading to help them with their comprehension skills. In reading we will be focusing on cause and effect. We will continue to work on the eight parts of speech ( nouns, pronouns, prepositions, adjectives, verb, adverb, conjunction, and interjection.

Writing:

We are working on persuasive writing. Persuasive writing is taking a standpoint on an idea and persuading your reader to agree with you. We will continue to work on strategies to build our persuasive arguments based on facts and reason.

Math:

Students need to continue to work on multiplication and division. We are still working on fractions. This week we are focusing on multiplying and dividing fractions. Please continue to work with students in using math in everyday life. This can be done by having students help you measure when cooking, calculate the amount of time that has lapsed between coming home and before dinner.

Science:

We will be begin talking about cell division and growth.

Reading/ELA

Students will work on elements of a setting and characterization, We will continue to work on imagery, figurative language, parts of speech, multiple meaning words, etc… Students should be reading nightly. While they are reading please make sure that you and the student are filling out their reading log information nightly. Students are expected to read 25 books by the end of the school year. Please make sure that you are asking them questions while they are reading to help them with their comprehension skills.

Writing:

We are working on persuasive writing. Persuasive writing is creating an essay that will influence someone to agree or disagree with the topic. The focus of persuasive writing is to state a clear position and support your position.

Math:

Students need to continue to work on multiplication and division. We will continue working on fractions. This week we will work on multiplying fractions, simplifying fractions, comparing fraction, etc… Please continue to work with students in using math in everyday life. This can be done by having students help you measure when cooking, calculate the amount of time that has lapsed between coming home and before dinner.

Social Studies:

We will continue discussing the Reconstruction Period and the importance of the Amendments.

WEEK OF OCTOBER 19th

Reading/ELA

We are working on narrative writing. Narrative writing is creating a story that can be used to write fiction and nonfiction essays. We will be working on supporting details and developing our character’s traits.

Math:

Students need to continue to work on multiplication and division. This week we will begin working on fractions. Please continue to work with students in using math in everyday life. This can be done by having students help you measure when cooking, calculate the amount of time that has lapsed between coming home and before dinner.

Social Studies:

We will begin discussing the Reconstruction Period and the importance of the Amendments.

Science:

We will continue to work on plant and animal cells this week.

The students are continuing to work on character traits, inferencing, figurative language,and parts of speech. Please check the agenda daily for homework assignments and notes to parents. Students are encouraged to read for at least thirty minutes each day. After reading, the student should record an entry in the reading log and parents should initial it. It is my goal for each child to have read at least 25 books by the end of the school year. Thanks for those of you who have conferenced with me regarding your child’s academic progress and social behavior! Please be reminded that the next early release date will be OCTOBER 14, 2009.

PLEASE NOTE: Report cards will be sent home OCTOBER 19, 2009.
